50 Staten Island volunteers help clean up Conference House Park

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — At least 15 bags of trash were removed from the beach and dunes at Conference House Park in Tottenville on Saturday, thanks to the help of 50 volunteers.

The effort was part of New York City H2O’s environmental stewardship programs, with support from Councilman Joseph Borelli (R-South Shore). Other program partners include New York City Parks Department, Partnerships for Parks and the Natural Resource Protection Association.

NYC H2O’s mission is to inspire and educate New Yorkers of all ages to learn about, enjoy, and protect their city’s local water ecology. It provides public and school programs at historic reservoirs, parklands, watersheds, bays, rivers and wetlands.

Saturday’s cleanup was held at Conference House Park, which is located along the Arthur Kill coast, where the kill opens into Raritan Bay. It contains clay bluffs, part of the terminal moraine, which was formed when the Wisconsin Glacier receded 10,000 years ago, according to NYC H2O.

Staff members from the Staten Island Zoo helped with the cleanup, as well as students and teachers from Tottenville High School in Huguenot, Staten Island Technical High School in New Dorp, and St. Clare School in Great Kills.
